Alcoa Expands 3D Printing with $60 Million

With additive manufacturing (AM) taking the manufacturing industry by storm, Alcoa decided to invest $60 million into expanding its 3D manufacturing capabilities. The 3D technology the company is spending on is at a technical center in western Pennsylvania.

The Upper Burrell Township center will expand to accommodate Alcoa’s new technology that will utilize 3D printers to create parts, referred to as Ampliforge processes. Klaus Kleinfeld, Alcoa’s chairman and chief executive officer commented on the expansion saying, “Alcoa is investing in the next generation of 3D printing for aerospace and beyond.”

Although the new additive manufacturing program will mostly create the produce the parts, other forms of traditional manufacturing will be used to complete it. To read more about Alcoa’s plans to invest and expend its 3D printing technology click here.

The Internet of Things (Underwater)

Project Sunrise, powered by the EU, is attempting to take the Internet of Things (IoT) to a whole new (sea) level. With a budget of €4 million, the University of La Sapienza in Rome will guide and coordinate the research and technology.

The project took interest because it only makes sense when the earth in covered in over 70% of water. As many people know it is difficult to get a wifi signal when you’re in an underground garage, let alone the ocean. With the IoT capabilities in mind, researchers have decided upon a more suitable approach to maintain steadily transmitted signals underwater. They will use sound waves, instead of radio waves, to transmit data.

The idea of sound waves came from a simple minded way of thinking, what can “survive” underwater and still communicate? Whales. To find out more how Project Sunrise will utilize and imitate the same sound intelligence as whales to expand the landscape of the IoT click here.

Alcoa - $60 Million 3D printingTextile Plant to Open in Cincinnati

The Cincinnati region will have 80 new jobs by the end of 2018 when the Legend Athletic Wear LLC opens its first U.S based manufacturing plant. Legend Athletic Wear LLC, the North American subsidiary of Legend Sportswear Pty Ltd., was approved a five-year jo creation tax credit. The Tax credit is $78,000, which is 45%.

The co-owners of Legend Sportswear Pty Ltd, Dr. Tan Kek Looi and Min Qi, are excited to expand the reach of the textile plant to 80 new employees, and invest $1.4 million into the new facility. “I want to brand Legend in the U.S.A., and then take it to China, and I have all the confidence that the Ohio team will make Legend famous,” Looi said. Ohio was chosen as the location, above California and Oregon. To read more about the building of the textile plant, the same one Nike uses, click here.

EU Grants GE the Alstom Buyout

The EU has approved GE to purchase Alstom, the French energy company, for €12 billion. Previously to the GE acquisition, Alstom had agreed to sell some of their assets to an Italian opposing company. The EU anti-trust regulators were unsure of parting with the company and leaving it in the hands of GE. To the EU, this buyout could have meant the U.S. would have been left as the leader in gas-turbine sectors. GE and Siemens would be the largest companies left in this market.

Mark Hutchinson, the GE executive heading the Alstom buyout said, “We are very happy with this decision. We wanted to preserve the economic rationale for this transaction. We believe we have achieved that.” To find out more about the challenges and key deciding factors that played into the GE-Alstom acquisition, click here.

New EXAIR No Drip External Mix Atomizing Nozzles Positively Stop Liquid Flow

September 11, 2015 By Jason Eelbode

External Mix Atomizing Spray Nozzles mix liquid and air outside the nozzle and allow the air and liquid flows to be adjusted independently. The new, patent pending, No Drip External Mix Atomizing Spray Nozzles from EXAIR work in the same way our standard atomizing nozzles do, but have the added benefit of positively stopping liquid flow when compressed air is shut off.

When spraying any type of liquid, post-spray liquid flow can cause big problems. Unwanted drips can ruin product function EXAIR No Drip External Mix Atomizing Nozzleson sealing or mating surfaces. Drips can also ruin the appearance of painted or coated finishes. In addition, excess liquid flow wastes precious resources such as expensive coatings, chemicals or water. The No Drip Atomizing Nozzles from EXAIR are ideal where no post-spray drip is permissible. When the compressed air supply is shut off, the no drip nozzle positively seals off the flow of liquid eliminating the possibility of drips.

EXAIR’s No Drip External Mix Atomizing Nozzles are available in three different liquid patterns: round, narrow angle flat fan and wide angle flat fan patterns. They are for pressure fed applications where precise liquid flow is needed. External nozzles can be used on liquids up to 800 centipoise.

Applications include painting, coating, rinsing, cooling, quenching, wetting (moistening), dust control and humidification. The compact Atomizing Nozzles are fully adjustable to minimize air and liquid consumption and have interchangeable liquid and air caps. They are CE compliant and conflict mineral free. Prices start at $346.

Walter Surface Technologies Unveils a Completely Redesigned Line of Magnetic Drill Units

September 11, 2015 By Jason Eelbode

Walter Surface Technologies, the global industry leader in surface treatment technologies, announces the introduction of the newly redesigned ICECUT 100 and ICECUT 200 magnetic drills. Underscoring Walter’s commitment to developing the industry’s most efficient products, the ICECUT provides unrivalled safety and reliability as it leverages state-of-the-art technologies, including the addition of the ACCUDRILL pressure indicator and material and thickness detector.

Redesigned for heavy duty applications, the ACCUDRILL safety amp meter, conveniently located in the central control panel, allows users to achieve the most productive drilling operation and prevents the motor from overloading and overheating. In addition, the ICECUT also includes a material and thickness detector. This device will not allow the drill to start when the magnetic holding power is insufficient to secure the unit to the work piece and operate safely.

Walter Surface Technologies - Ice Cut“In recent years, the market has been shifting towards lightweight magnetic drills” explains Stephane Drainville, Product Manager for Walter. “The ICECUT 100 and 200 magnetic drills are the most versatile units available today. They provide the safest way to drill large holes, regardless of user experience. This results in a lower production and labor costs.”

ICECUT 100: the most compact portable unit on the market today
Designed for off-site drilling, the ICECUT 100 weights 22lbs and is the only lightweight, mobile system that can provide both maximum cutting efficiency and safety with 850 Watts of power and 600RPM’s.

ICECUT 200: the versatile and powerful 2 speed unit
The ICECUT 200 provides unparalleled performance when compared to other magnetic drilling units. Engineered for heavy duty applications, it weights 27lbs and operates at 300RPM’s and 600RPM’s, allowing users to cut smaller and larger holes with precision.

To ensure the fastest drilling time and maximum life of the core cutters, ICECUT magnetic drill units are ideally paired with Walters’s new line of annular cutters and the ICECUT cutting lubricants. “Operators now have the perfect drilling technology and solution in hand, with the most competitively priced unit on the market today” concludes Drainville.

The ICECUT 100 and 200 are available now.
